in the beginning…

Okay. I am starting this blog about a year into my forray into life online. I have 8 sites on the net, with varying degrees of success with each. I have spent a good amount of time in development, content generation, and learning about SEO tactics and all around internet marketing strategies. I will use this blog to share my journey with you. I will be sharing my trials and errors as I go through building an online business, and sharing my opinions about the various tools that I use to do so.

Web Directory Project

I have been doing some research into starting my own directory, but I gave up after not finding the technology that I want. Here is what I want in the “perfect directory”. This script would have a web crawler that I could enter keywords into to find relevant sites for my niche directory, then it would be able to clean the data and assemble it into a basic directory (some of my help would be required here). After all this, it would send out e-mails to all the sites that I have listed, and ask them to fill in the rest of their information (no charge) and ask for a link back. I would make money using affiliate and google adsense links. ANYWAY, it was a good thought, but after spending roughly 5 hours online looking for the perfect newbie script, I gave up. So now I am just concentrating on getting my own directory database together. I am starting a spreadsheet that references all the web directories that I stumble across. Some of them are niche directories which only really pertain to a couple of my sites, while others are of a more general nature. I hope to use these as a back link tool for my sites. I started registering in the directories this weekend; testing my site at http://www.aa-exercise-equipment.com/ just to see if it makes a difference. That was my first affiliate site so I use it for a lot of test scenarios. I stumbled across a pretty cool site at http://www.strongestlinks.com/. They are a great reference in finding out a bunch of directories. I signed up for a free trial and got access to about 300 different directories.

E-book Review - The Stampede Secret

Every once in a while I purchase an e-book that makes great promises about how I am going to get scads of traffic and I will be rich beyond my wildest dreams. Sounds too good to be true? It usually is, but I still fall into the trap now and again. I recently read the The Stampede Secret, which focuses on the latest trends in blogging and RSS feeds. What I got from the book is how to continually update the site through RSS and blogging so that there is continuous content generating at your site. I think that RSS is still in its infancy, as a lot of the Internet marketers and news sites have them, but I don’t think that it is widely accepted by the average user. HOWEVER, look out when it is, and it would be great to be ahead of the pack on this one. I would recommend reading it, especially if you are wondering where to get a good overview of blogging and RSS.
