Overloaded with Info?

I was looking at my desk the other day, feeling completely overwhelmed by no less than 30 trade magazines that I should churn through, never mind the stack of books that I have been meaning to get at for the last 6 months. I like to be well informed, but time and time I fail again at putting MORE reading into my daily routine.

However, I think I may have found a solution. There is a website that offers MP3 and executive summaries of the most highly sought after business books.

Adsense Tips

Google is the pioneer in contextual advertising (displaying ads that are relevant to the content on the web page. Many bloggers, business owners, and webmasters use adsense to supplement their income. Some actually make a very decent living from the use of Adsense on their site(s).

Here are some of my top adsense tips that I use on my sites:
  • Blend in your ads - in the adsense code generation wizard, choose the same background color on your ads as your web page, same color text for your hyperlink, same heading as your titles on your page etc…your ad should blend in completly with the color scheme of your site.
  • Place your ads in a “hot zone” - Go to Google Adsense and look for the Optimization link. It gives a picture of where the best places are to put their adsense on your web page.
  • Use link ad units - Google has new text link ad units that look similar to navigation links. Some webmasters that I have spoken with have enjoyed a high click through rate (CTR) with these new link units.
  • Place images next to your ads to draw the eye naturally to that area on the page.
  • Maximize the amount of ads that you can place on any given page. Currently, it is limited to three units. This could be made up of a skyscraper ad, Google search area, and a set of text link units.
  • Use custom ad channels to track where your revenue is coming from. I don’t know how many times I have regretted being lazy and not following through on this advice. DO IT.

Making a living at this blogging stuff

While Darren Rowse (owner of ProBlogger.net) is away, he has several guest bloggers who are writing articles about their experiences with blogging. One recent post by Jill Manty talks about her experiences with blogging and making money with her blogs. She writes…

I consider the site a success for a number of reasons. One, it made money. Not enough to retire on, but enough to buy a used car, which we desperately needed. Two, I was interviewed by several media sources and was even quoted for a front page story in The Washington Post. That was pretty exciting, as that sort of thing doesn’t usually happen to a stay-at-home wife and mom to five children. Finally, I consider it a success because it has finally gotten me to see what my husband has said along– you can make a living from blogging. We’re in the process of trying out several new blogging ideas. Some of them have been more successful than others. I have no doubt we will drop some of them in time, or convert them to something different.

Darren Rowse has a great course called six figure blogging that teaches how to make money with blogging. If you are interested in building a blog empire (or just making some extra cash), I would recommend checking it out.
